Buffalo, NY in popular opinion is a blue collar town. In the old days when the Erie Canal was still the primary passage for ships into and out of the Great Lakes, Buffalo was a manufacturing and transportation hub. Industry in Buffalo revolved around shipping, steel and automobile manufacturing, and grain storage. However, although there are still two car factories and a few smaller steel mills, Buffalo, NY has largely been made obsolete as shipping was rerouted by the opening of the Saint Lawrence Seaway and all that is left of the former manufacturing center is the public perception of Buffalo as "blue collar."

In reality, however, Buffalo, New York's economy has diversified. Researchers at the University of Buffalo and the Roswell Park Cancer center are giving Buffalo a reputation as a center of bioinformatics through their work on the Human Genome Project. Buffalo is also home to a number of financial institutions in banking and debt collection. The most prominent are the main headquarters of M&T bank, which has more than 65 billion dollars in assets, and the American headquarters of Canadian financial giant HSBC bank.

Though all these industries exist in Buffalo, NY its primary role now is of a college town. Education, from primary onward is a major selling point for the city. The dropout rate for area high schools is less than 6% and the more than 80% of graduates go on to college. The Human Genome Project research is a major draw for students. The State University of New York, or SUNY has three campuses in town with a combined total of 40,000 students. There are also a number of private institutes and vocational training schools.
